A Slam Dunk for Elwood’s Unified Basketball Team

The halls of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School were buzzing with pride last week as the school’s Unified basketball team continued their winning season with a victory over Northport. The celebration began long before tip-off. In a heartwarming show of school spirit, students and staff lined the corridors for a celebratory parade, cheering on the Knights athletes as they made their way to the gym.

The game itself opened with a powerful moment of inclusion and talent, featuring a moving rendition of the national anthem performed by the school’s Acapellawood ensemble and beautifully signed by its American Sign Language students. The momentum stayed high through halftime, thanks to a stellar, high-energy performance by the Elwood Middle School kickline team and members of the high School kickline team.  

The festivities extended well beyond the final buzzer. Fans participated in carnival games and shirt-decorating stations, and even got the chance to hit their favorite staff members in the face with a pie.  

“It was a truly incredible afternoon, but the most defining part of the event wasn't the score – it was the profound teamwork, sportsmanship and kindness demonstrated by all the players on the court and by the fans in the stands,” Assistant Principal Lindsay Fritch said. “It was a day that perfectly captured the very best of our school community.”
