Elwood Honors Board Members and Staff at Commendations Ceremony

The Elwood School District held a memorable commendations ceremony at the June 11 Board of Education meeting, honoring students, Board members and exemplary educators for their service to the district’s schools and students.

Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Peter Bell, the district’s very first ex officio student board member, was the first to be honored with a plaque after he presented his final report to the community.

“You were a true advocate for every building in the school district,” Board of Education President James Tomeo told Bell. “You were well prepared and we really appreciate all of your work, both at this Board table and as a student, scholar and athlete.” 

Next to be honored was retiring Board member Dr. Sara Siddiqui. First elected to the Board in 2020, the dedicated pediatrician served as a Board liaison for the Health and Nutrition Committee and was the 2024 recipient of the 16th Legislative District's Healthcare Hero Award.

“We recognize and celebrate you and your dedication, commitment and lasting mark on the Board of Education and the entire Elwood community,” said Tomeo, praising Dr. Siddiqui for fostering a culture of professionalism, thoughtful dialogue and mutual respect. “Your insight, perspective and steady presence will surely be missed.”

Finally, the Board honored newly tenured faculty and staff, retirees and 25-year employees.

Retirees honored were Director of Humanities Pam Fine; teachers Martha DeMartini, Lorraine DePietri, Lisa Sallie, Christine Shay, Kristin Tiernan, Gloria Vetter and Diane Warren; and staff members Tracey Benfante, Lyn Bubeck, Anne Cosmai, David DeSimone, Lisa Fassberger, Martha Hanley, Eilish Sheridan, Suzanne Smyth, Mary Ann Sorrese, Melanie Spooner, Judith Tessitore, Rose Viteritti and Stephanie West.

Recognized for 25 years of dedicated service were Vita Kahler, Florence Postorino and Antonietta Russo.

Receiving tenure were teachers Elle Chan, Kristen Devine, Marley Herbert, Samantha McDermott, Devon Pisano, William Riedel, Shannon Rooney and John Rottkamp; and teaching assistants Irene Calanese, Samantha Messina, Monique Pardes and Jillian Sparks.

Noting that the retiring teachers represented almost 500 years of experience, Tomeo said, “To the tenured teachers tonight, look to your left and right and realize, those are the shoes you have to fill. Elwood does a lot with a little, and it really does take a village. For those leaving our mighty village, thank you for your many dedicated years of service. You will be greatly missed and we wish you nothing but the best in your retirement and future endeavors.”
